3 out of 5 stars Delay or Inaccurate? Performance Issues?   November 21, 2008

Has anyone else experienced slow response, inaccuracy or weird behavior when switching from Standard Batteries to the rechargeable ones in this pack? When I play Tennis on WiiSports sometimes I'll swing the remote and my character doesn't swing at all. I've also noticed I'm not as accurate in Tennis, Bowling or Baseball. It could either be the reduction in weight, or the fact that they aren't sending a strong enough signal, I don't know. I'm no Electrical Enginner, but I know when a product doesn't work the way it should.

3 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it more...   August 5, 2008

I bought this charging station on the day that I bought my 3rd and 4th Wii remotes. It was an impulse buy, I admit it, but I didn't want to buy a 2nd Nyko Charge Station on account of the extra AC adapter and extra space.

So I brought it home. Here are my thoughts:

Another reviewer mentions the substandard battery packs. It's true that the battery packs are lighter than the Nyko packs (and AA batteries), but the reduced mAh ratings don't mean reduced responsiveness or lag -- a lower mAh rating with similar voltage would only mean that the remote could not go as long between charges. Since the voltage is the same, gameplay is not affected (and I personally have NO gameplay issues with these batteries). Since I put the remotes in the dock whenever I'm done playing, I never notice the reduced play time (even after several hours of playing).

Now, regarding the constant charge issue mentioned, I don't think it's an issue at all because the unit does stop charging the remotes when the batteries are completely charged. I leave my remotes on the charger 24/7 and in the couple of months that I've owned it, there has not been a single "melted battery". You know that the charger stops sending the current to the battery when the red LED turns off.

Now on to the things that I DID notice. :)

The blue LEDs are really bright. And they are on all the time. There is no dimmer or switch to turn the blue LED's off (note that these are not CHARGE lights -- the charge lights are red). These lights can only be turned off by unplugging the base, and that defeats the purpose of a charging base, doesn't it? A simple on/off switch for the blue lights would be great, since they serve no purpose at all other than to look cool (they are even on when the charge ports are empty).

I still don't understand why no one seems to be able to foresee the fact that most consumers will have the strap attached to their remote! Everyone I know has the strap attached! It wouldn't be difficult to have a little cut-out on the side of each port that you could place the strap in so that the remote sits securely on the base. But no, you have to find a way to get the remote to touch the contacts while it's sitting on the strap. Sure, figuring out this balancing act does get easier with time, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Finally, I can't say that I'm a huge fan of this base's shape. The circular nature of it is inefficient -- it takes up more space than it needs to. Had it been designed as a rectangle with the four ports lined up single-file from front to back, the footprint would be significantly smaller and I'd actually be able to fit it somewhere near my Wii. As it is, I have to put it by the passthrough to the kitchen because I have way too much crap in my home theater shelves.

Now keep in mind -- this unit DOES charge like it's supposed to, and the batteries DO work well, without any problems. You won't likely find any problems with its performance. It's just all of these little fiddly bits that irritate me.

So in summary, I give it three stars for doing its job. It didn't get more, because while it may do its job and do it well... it certainly didn't do it with much grace or sophistication. :-)

The four-controller charge station for Wii by React seems to be the convenient solution for households with four motes. However, if you do some research, you'll find that its rechargeable batteries are 550 mAh, much lower than your standard AA's or the batteries that come with Nyko's dual-charge dock. I didn't think this would make a huge difference, but after using them a couple of times, I found that the weaker battery power caused the controller to lag and seriously hurt the Wiimote's range of motion. While this won't affect its performance for most games, games that require precision movements (for me, Mario Party 8 and Mario Kart with the Wheel) will be very difficult to play. At times, the Wiimote may not respond to motions, veer to one side, or be disconnected from the Wii.

Unlike the Pelican dual charge stand for PS3 which features an auto shut-off function when the controller is fully charged, this product cannot remain plugged in to a power source for an extended period of time or the battery may melt. This extra maintenance is kind of annoying, but you could live with it. However, its LED's are distractingly bright (compared to the Pelican dual charge stand for PS3's LED's which I found pleasantly subtle and not at all distracting). Without an on/off switch for the LED's, you'll definitely want to unplug this while watching a movie, etc.

The stand itself is nice, but its rather expensive to serve as just a stand. It helps get rid of some of the clutter, and the Wiimote strap can dangle off the sides without affect its charge. The Wiimotes don't rest perfectly securely and often have to be moved around a little bit to ensure that they are being charged (the red LED that shows it is properly connected is helpful). A plus I found with this battery pack is that it is less bulky than that of the Nyko dock and thus fits in fine with the Wheel and other accessories. It's lighter than the Wiimote with two AA's, too.

Bottom line: the React charge station is a decent product if you aren't going to be too picky with its weak battery and other minor flaws.
