Effective solution - lacking in design November 13, 2008 Obadiah (Middleton, WI USA) This is a very handy third party application that effectively takes up the slack for the design flaw of the PS3. With the PS3 you get one wireless controller that is charged via a USB wire to the CPU. The problem is when you purchase additional remotes Sony thoughtfully fails to add an additional USB charging wire. The additional USB wire must then be purchased separately. Further, there is only one additional USB port on the front of the PS3, and more significantly, the remote(s) are charged ONLY while the PS3 is on. What a waste of electricity, and in my opinion, a design flaw. The Nyko charge base resolves these issues by allowing your remotes to charge independent of the PS3. It's a good solution to overcome a bad design on the part of Sony. The downsides to the Nyko charging base are this, first, the LEDs are way too bright. I have two charging bases for four controllers, so with four bright LEDs it looks like it's permanently Christmas time at our house. Add these Nyko LEDs to all the other LEDs that manufacturers now insist on over populating in every other electronic device and our entertainment area looks like a freaking airport landing strip! Nyko and other electronics manufacturers ought to stop adding multiple LEDs for little reason other than trying to jazz up the looks of their product. Enough! Second, the overall product design is simply not very elegant. It screams cheap, shiny, plasticy overseas mass factory production. Lastly, the plastic Nyko adapter that plugs into the controller to dock to the charger unit is fine, and a good solution, but you had better not lose that piece or you can pretty much throw your charger away. Overall, this is a very good product. I just think it could have had a more elegant design. Four stars, with one star removed for those ugly, way too bright, LEDs.
Works great November 13, 2008 RacerGT I've had this for about 8 months now, with no problems. It works great! The LEDs are bright, so I wouldn't put it in my bedroom or something. I hid it behind the TV in my living room and isn't bright enough to bother me while watching movies with the room dark.
Works very well October 27, 2008 J. C. Dixon (Yardley, PA United States) This is a great product, does a great job, no more dead controllers. The charging indicator lights are quite bright, but that works well for me, kind of a night light for the basement
Great Charger! October 26, 2008 Steve (UT, USA) This charger is great and really handy to just drop your controller in. You do need to place a plastic adapter on the controller where the USB slot is. It fits really nice but am a little worried about it coming out with rough play of kids. Lights are also really big and bright as others have mentioned but these are very small to how well and quickly it charges.
Gets the job done but watch out for the BRIGHT LIGHT!!!! October 14, 2008 Catfish Kozmo (Arlington, TX) Let's be honest. It's a bummer that the PS3 has to be on constantly with an ugly USB cable sticking out the front for the controllers to charge. That seems like an oversight on a pretty cool system. Which brings us to the need for something else that will charge up the controllers when you're not playing and the system is off. Great. This does the job nicely. There's a nice little USB insert that sticks into the back of the controller and makes charging so simple. But I've got to knock off a star because the lights on this thing are so bright, it's like having a small TV on in the room. I don't need a nightlight in my living room. And these lights are very bright. My simple solution was to tape over the lights a few times. I'm just hoping it doesn't catch my house on fire. What else can you do? Seriously, it's that bright.
